The Question of Pattern in the Cover of the Novel al-Jalawji: Between the Aesthetic and the Cultural

Ezzedine Jellaouji’s creative presence has made him a compelling subject of critical inquiry, thanks to his experimental narrative techniques, rich linguistic texture, and the surprising, often uncanny worlds of his fiction. This study examines a selection of his novels through what is termed the linguistic envelope, focusing on the novelistic

cover as a paratextual and semiotic space that exerts communicative and interpretive influence on the reader. By analyzing these thresholds as cultural patterns that encode inherited cognitive and social values, the study explores how such paratexts shape the reader’s initial perceptions and orient their understanding of the narrative. The analysis further reveals the extent to which Jellaouji’s discourse engages-consciously or implicitly-with these embedded cultural systems.
