The Social Dimension in Modern Arabic Linguistic Research: Models and Issues

The study examines the impact of the social dimension in modern Arabic linguistic research, starting from the hypothesis that modern Arabic linguistic studies did not limit themselves to the structural description of language, but rather balanced between the linguistic system and the social context. It clarifies that the openness of Arabic linguistic scholarship to Western sociolinguistics was not merely the result of translation, but the outcome of direct academic training and mentorship of Arab researchers in Western universities, under the guidance of prominent European and American linguists. The study also found evidence of an early awareness among Arab linguists of the importance of the social dimension, even before formally engaging with this field. Later, this awareness evolved into a qualitative phase, reflected in the publication of in-depth scholarly studies that addressed sociolinguistic issues through modern linguistic methodologies. These efforts developed along two distinct research paths: a theoretical path and an applied path, although the latter proved more productive and impactful. Nevertheless, there remains an urgent need to establish an independent Arab sociolinguistic tradition rooted in Arabic linguistic achievements and social linguistic phenomena, while remaining open to global linguistic practices, meeting local needs, and achieving distinction beyond mere imitation and replication.
